Nana Boakye Agyei II, the Chief of Jamdede in the Berekum West District, has made an urgent plea to the government to intervene and stop the unlawful encroachment on approximately 200 acres of land IN Berekum.
The land which is vital for the expansion of the Berekum Division Police serves as a protective buffer for the Berekum Water Treatment Plant along the Koraa River.
The encroachment poses a significant threat to the area’s water quality and supply, as this land is essential for the sustainable development of both police facilities and water resources. The chief’s call for action highlights the serious risks posed by these illegal activities to the community’s future access to clean water.
“Despite our efforts to prevent this encroachment, we have not been successful,” he stated, emphasising the urgent need for governmental action.
Local residents expressed their frustrations regarding the persistent water shortages affecting their community.
“The situation is dire, and we need immediate solutions,” one resident stated.
Beyond water concerns, Nana Boakye Agyei also drew attention to the deteriorating state of local roads, particularly the Berekum-Sampa and Berekum-Seikwa routes, which further hinder access to essential resources.
He warned that increasing encroachment by developers and new settlements on the 200-acre land designated for police expansion and as a buffer for the water treatment facility threatens the integrity of the Koraa River.
The issue has already been raised in parliament by the Berekum West Member of Parliament, while local leaders, including Chief Nana Boakye Agyei, continue to express deep concern over these growing challenges.
