The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has fined Nations FC forward Emmanuel Annor GHC 500 for misconduct during a Ghana Premier League clash with Asante Kotoko.
The sanction stems from Annor’s goal celebration in which he removed his jersey to reveal a vest bearing a religious message: “I belong to Jesus.”
The act was deemed a violation of league regulations that prohibit players from displaying religious or political messages during official matches.
In a statement issued on Tuesday (13 May 2025), the GFA’s Disciplinary Committee found the player guilty of breaching conduct rules meant to maintain neutrality and inclusivity on the field. The association reiterated its stance that such displays are not permitted under current league guidelines.
“He has also been strongly warned that any further misconduct will result in severe sanctions,” the GFA stated.
The incident has since stirred debate across Ghana’s football community. While some fans and commentators have defended Annor’s right to express his faith, others argue that football should remain a neutral platform, free from personal, religious, or political declarations.
