Elizabeth Sackey, 36 other women to be named MMDCEs

Thirty-seven women, including the former MP Elizabeth Sackey, are expected to be named metropolitan, municipal or district chief executives in Akufo-Addo’s approved list of MMDCEs

The former deputy Greater Accra regional minister in the first-term government of President Akufo-Addo, Elizabeth Sackey, and 36 other women are expected to be named metropolitan, municipal or district chief executives in the soon-to-be-released approved list of MMDCEs.

Sackey is tipped to replace Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah as the chief executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), the post commonly referred to as the Mayor of Accra.

Female executives retained

Two female MMDCEs who are tipped to retain their positions are Catherine Reckling, the district chief executive for Sekyere South in the Ashanti Rgion, and Martina Appiah Nyantakyi, the municipal chief executive officer for Ahafo Ano North, also in the Ashanti Region.

Diana Attaa-Kusiwaa, the municipal chief executive for Nkoranza South in the Bono East Region, is also expected to retain her position.

So is Margaret Darko, the municipal chief executive for Suhum in the Eastern Region.

New entrants

The newcomers to the role of MMDCE include Josephine Awuku Ansaa Inkoom for Ayensuano, one of the 33 districts in the Eastern Region, Anna Adukwei Addo for Tema West Municipal Assembly, one of the ten newly created metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) in Greater Accra, and Zuweiratu Mada Nashiru as district chief executive for Chereponi in the North East Region.

The three women will be taking their place among the leaders of the 260 MMDAs across Ghana.

Finalised list

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo submitted the list of nominated metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs) on Thursday 16 September 2021 to the Minister of Local Government and Regional Reorganisation, Dan Botwe.

The news was disclosed by the director of communications in the Office of the President, Eugene Arhin, in a Facebook post.

In the post, Arhin confirmed that the president has finalised the list of nominees and said the Local Government Minister will announce the names shortly.

“List of MMDCE nominees finalised by President Akufo-Addo; it will be submitted in the morning to the Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Hon Dan Botwe. Expect the list to be announced by the Minister very soon,” Arhin said.

Delay in appointments

Nine months in to a new Akufo-Addo government, the president has come under pressure over the delay in appointing new MMDCEs.

However, the Office of the President has rejected claims that the delay in appointing MMDCEs is hampering development at the local government level in any way.
