Electricity cable theft threatens our operations, says NEDCo

According to Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), it is losing revenue due to the electricity cable theft menace

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) in Sunyani, has expressed worry over the growing incidence of cable theft at its substations by some unscrupulous people.

According to the Sunyani area manager of NEDCo, Eugene Add-Odoi, the stealing of cables used to connect power from NEDCo transformers to supply communities is affecting their operations,

He said NEDCo is losing revenue due to such activity.

“The cable theft is affecting the quality of power supply to customers, the system belongs to all of us, and we can not be everywhere. We expect people to be watched over the network because we can’t employ security 24/7 to watch over the network this could add up to the cost of utility. So, I will urge the public to help us apprehend these people,” said Addo-Odi.

He said NEDCo would deepen collaboration with security agencies to nip what he describes as the devastating operations of cable thieves in the Bono, Ahafo, and Bono East Regions (BABE) in the bud.

The area engineer, Eric Ofori recounted a situation where a cable was stolen in Kenyase in the Ahafo Region leading to the damage fo a 35.5 KVA transformer worth GHC120,000.

“At Kenyase a community called Jordan belan community in the Ahafo Region, they stole the cable over there, our attention was not drawn. They cut the earthen wire that protects the transformer and the lines. When we experienced a lighting strike that very night, we lost a 35.5 KVA transformer worth about GHC120,000. So the issue of cable theft is really to us, said Ofori”.

Meanwhile, the stealing of NEDCo cables and consumption meters of the GWCL is becoming alarming. Just recently, the Ghana Water Company Limited also complained about the rampant stealing of consumption meters and other connection equipment.

Cable theft, often carried out at nighttime, is increasing across the Bono, Ahafo, and the Bono East regions, throwing communities into sudden darkness and promoting insecurity in these areas.
