Convener of Election Watch Ghana, Mark Awusi, has appealed to the Ghana Police Service, the National Peace Council and the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to urgently issue and enforce clear security guidelines ahead of the party’s presidential flagbearer election scheduled for 31 January.
Speaking on The Big Bulletin on Asaase Radio, Awusi said his organisation has become increasingly alarmed by reports of violence, intimidation and growing tensions within the NPP’s internal campaign activities.
According to him, recent incidents involving supporters being beaten or chased away from campaign venues are becoming more frequent and pose a serious threat to the integrity of the party’s internal electoral process.
He cited an incident in which a female aspirant, was allegedly forced out of a campaign venue and prevented from addressing supporters during a tour, as well as reported attacks on social media activists affiliated with various camps within the party.
“These developments are very alarming and do not promote integrity in our electoral process,” Awusi said, adding that security cannot be separated from elections.
He stressed that any instability within the NPP should be treated as a national security concern, given the party’s central role in Ghana’s democratic system.
“The NPP is one of the two major political parties in this country. Anything that threatens its peace and stability must concern all of us as a nation,” he noted.
Awusi disclosed that Election Watch Ghana has formally written to the Ghana Police Service, the National Peace Council and the leadership of the NPP, calling for an urgent meeting to discuss measures to prevent violence during the January 31 election.
He said the group is advocating for a coordinated framework where all campaign activities by aspirants are agreed upon in advance by the police, party leadership and the respective campaign teams.
As the election draws closer, Awusi warned that tensions within the party continue to rise, raising concerns about post-primary unity.
He noted that internal threats, intimidation and violence could weaken party cohesion and undermine the ability of the eventual flagbearer to unite the party ahead of the 2026 general elections.
“If we begin feeling threatened from one camp to another, it weakens the unity that is required for the party to contest the general election,” he said.
On speculation surrounding opinion polls predicting outcomes of the race, Awusi said Election Watch Ghana has not conducted any survey and does not intend to declare any likely winner.
He maintained that the organisation’s focus remains on electoral integrity and security rather than polling.
“It is very difficult to say person A or person B will win at this stage,” he said, adding that whoever emerges victorious must be supported by the party to ensure stability going forward.
Election Watch Ghana says it will continue monitoring developments in the lead-up to the NPP flagbearer election and engage relevant stakeholders to promote peace and calm within the party.
