Akufo-Addo: I admit difficulties, next NPP leader best positioned to get us out

President Akufo-Addo has stated that he is the first person to admit that the country is going through economic challenges, however, he believes the next New Patriotic Party (NPP) leader, if elected in 2024, will be the country’s best bet to continue with the recovery and get Ghanaians completely out of the situation.
Speaking to journalists immediately after casting his ballot last Saturday (August 26) at the Special Electoral College process to elect the 2024 NPP presidential candidate, the President stressed that he was the first to admit that the economic situation has been severe for Ghanaians.
”It is difficult, I am the first to admit, I have said it several times, I am first to admit it. But at the end of the day, when the moment comes, Ghanaians will reflect on the best to get us out of these difficulties and take us to the next stage, that is the New Patriotic Party (NPP)” Akufo-Addo said.
The President saw the flagbearership contest as a necessary step in the efforts to find a solution to the current economic difficulties the country is dealing with .
Some are interpreting his words to be a subtle endorsement of his Vice President, the renowned economist, Mahamudu Bawumia and that President Akufo-Addo sees his Vice President as very capable in leading the country to the next level, after 2024, when his own two constitutional terms expire.
Vice-President Bawumia took a giant step towards becoming the presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Saturday (26 August) by securing a landslide victory in the party’s special electoral college.
The certified results declared by the Electoral Commission show that Bawumia won 629 votes (or 68.15% of the total valid votes cast across the 17 centres), to top the pack.
The MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, came second, polling 132 votes (14.3%), followed by the former trade minister Alan Kyerematen, who had a total of 95 votes (10.29%).
The former agriculture minister Owusu Afriyie Akoto picked the fourth spot, having garnered 36 votes (3.9%), followed by Francis Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko, who won nine votes each (0.98%), leaving them to contend for the fifth position in a run-off.
Nine hundred and fifty-five delegates voted at 17 polling centres across Ghana to whittle down the number of candidates from ten to five. There will be a final primary ballot on 4 November among the top five NPP contenders to select a flagbearer for the 2024 elections.
