Obuobia describes calls to contest Weija Gbawe as despicable

The popular broadcaster and NDC deputy national communication director says rumours suggesting she could run again for the seat are “unfortunate” and “shameful”

Obuobia Darko-Opoku, a deputy national communication director of the National Democratic Congress, has described calls by some fellow constituents for her to contest the Weija Gbawe seat for the NDC again as despicable.

The former Weija Gbawe NDC parliamentary candidate took to Facebook to register her displeasure with the development.

Her post reads: “My attention has been drawn to the unfortunate activities of some fellow constituents in Weija Gbawe, reportedly calling for me to contest the seat for our party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“This is shameful, unacceptable and disrespectful of our party regulations, our PC for Weija Gbawe and myself. I totally dissociate myself from the unacceptable occurrences in the Weija Gbawe Constituency.”

Dedicated to the party

Obuobia insisted that she did not take part in the party’s primaries for 2020 because she has decided she does not want to run for Parliament.

She said that since 2016 she has continued to pursue her dedicated commitment to supporting the constituency and the party chairman, including during the period of voter registration that has just ended.

“I have also been involved, with the support of a senior female member of the party, to resolve some issues between the PC, the constituency executives, co-ordinators and branch executives and we had been largely successful. I am surprised at the turn of events in the constituency,” she wrote.

She therefore called on the Greater Accra regional secretariat of the NDC to step up work urgently and steadfastly to help bring harmony to the constituency.

Disgruntled constituents

Checks made by www.asaaseradio.com show that dissatisfaction is brewing among followers of the party in Weija Gbawe.

It follows what some of them describe as poor human relations between party members and the current NDC candidate for the constituency, Cleland Ayaa Ayison.

Ayison was elected to run on the NDC ticket in the party’s August 2019 primaries, polling 576 votes against 295 for his contender, Nii Saka Allotey.
