NDC will transform and depoliticise fisheries sector, says Mahama
John Mahama is confident the NDC will win the December poll and proceed to correct everything that has gone wrong with fisheries in Ghana
The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has promised to transform and depoliticise the fisheries industry if he wins the elections in December.
Addressing fisherfolk at Ayakpor in Ada on Tuesday (28 October) at the start of his five-day campaign tour of the Greater Accra Region, Mahama bemoaned the collapse of the fisheries industry under the presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He argued that the sector has collapsed because the government has monopolised the distribution of premix fuel and subsidised outboard motors for its members and supporters only, who function as middlemen.
“When the premix comes, they give to their party executives and they put their profit on top and sell it to the fishermen, and that is the problem with the NPP government and that is the problem with this administration,” the former president alleged.
He added: “Everything is about their party. It means anybody else is not Ghanaian and it is only they who are entitled to the opportunities this country has to offer.”
Confident of winning
He was confident that the NDC will win the 7 December 2020 general election to correct everything that has gone wrong within fisheries to create opportunity for all.
He said the fishermen’s groups will be allowed to take ownership of the premix fuel, as well as the subsidised outboard motors, and share these among members.
Mahama therefore entreated Ghanaians to vote massively for him in the election to enable him to create prosperity for all and not the few, as he says is happening under President Akufo-Addo.
The five-day tour of Greater Accra will see the main opposition leader visiting Ada, Ashaiman, Kpone Katamanso, Ningo Prampram, Sege, Shai Osudoku, Tema Central, Tema East and Tema West.
The NDC will also hold a regional thanksgiving service on Sunday 1 November.
