NDC halts Election 2020 campaigning for three days

The flagbearer, John Mahama, and other leaders say the move is to allow the party to focus on investigating challenges with the voters’ register

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has ordered the suspension of all campaign activities by the party over the next three days.

Mahama has asked campaign staff to focus instead on investigating irregularities in the voters’ register, especially allegations that the register omits thousands of NDC supporters’ names.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Thursday (24 September), he said: “I have, in consultation with our functional executive committee, asked all our constituency branch executives to halt any campaigning activity for the next three days and just focus on this exhibition exercise

“At the end of the exercise, from Monday, let’s receive your report about what the incidences in your individual constituencies and branches have been.”

Challenging stance

Mahama stressed: “This is very important, because if we don’t get this voters’ register right, what is the use of campaigning, only to go and have a flawed voters’ register that could distort the results of the elections?”

He said that although the NDC has exhibited restraint in its reponse to the electoral exercise so far, “We will not accept the results of a flawed election. We will certainly not look on, neither will we shirk our civil responsibility and allow the EC, whether by ill-intent or sheer incompetence to usurp the people’s mandate in the 7 December poll.”

The NDC flagbearer this week suspended his tour of the Bono Region over concerns regarding the voters’ register. He said the move was to enable him and other NDC leaders to travel back to Accra to assist with investigating “challenges with the voters’ register”.

“I am cutting short my tour of the Bono Region to return to Accra because of the increasing reports of challenges with the voter register and the exhibition process,” Mahama posted on his Facebook page.
