I’ve been up throughout the night monitoring the elections, says Kufuor

Former President John Kufuor says this year's presidential and parliamentary elections have been a very tight race

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor says he has been staying up throughout the night monitoring the results of the 7 December poll.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show with Kojo Mensah, Kufuor said: “I have been up throughout the night following the results and listening to the results from all over the country.”

President Kufuor said the race to the Jubilee House has been “a very tight race,” adding “Thank God, I believe that my party has won the presidency. Parliament I quite expected to have performed far better than it has so far but I believe that marginally we are taking the House.

Whether he is disappointed in the results so far, President Kufuor said “… but I thought we would do far better than that…the country appreciated the party, otherwise our president wouldn’t have performed as well as he did.

“But this shows that people are very discerning these days – they affect people individually and on merit, so they(electorates) distinguish between the president and the MPs.”

Kufuor was born in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region on 8 December 1938.

He celebrates his 82nd birthday today (8 December).
