Inusah Fuseini: “Parallel government” comment can’t be a crime

The CID has written to the Speaker of Parliament for permission to interrogate Inusah Fuseini, the Tamale Central Member of Parliament

Inusah Fuseini, the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central says his “parallel government” comment was only an expression of his opinion and cannot be classified as a criminal act.

“I know as a matter of fact that what I said is not criminal…haven’t you read the Constitution? Is the expression of an opinion criminal?

“I mean the opinion may be outlandish, it might be unfortunate; some have described at absurd, others have said it’s irresponsible but that doesn’t make it a crime. Unless you can point to me what makes it a crime. We are not in 1984, big brother shouldn’t be watching,” Inusah Fuseini told Beatrice Adu in an interview on the Big Bulletin on Asaase radio.

Fuseini has confirmed being invited by the CID but he is however, not sure whether he will show up at the CID on Thursday (24 December) adding “I’ve referred the letter to my lawyers and they will advise me accordingly.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has invited Tamale Central Member of Parliament Inusah Fuseini

The invitation by the CID is in connection with Fuseini’s call on former President John Mahama to form a parallel government after the Electoral Commission (EC) declared President Akufo-Addo the winner of the 7 December polls.

According to Fuseini, Mahama won the election hands down and so must declare himself the president and form a parallel government.

“I have said and I have advocated that he declares himself president and forms a parallel government. The impunity of this government which is legendary must stop and that’s how we stop it,” he said.

“It’s an opinion”

“Well, I thought that the police as their name implies the Criminal Investigations Department investigates crime and for them to invite you they would be investigating crime and so I thought that their letter would disclose the nature of the crime that the comment is alleged to have committed.

“But I do not know what they are investigating because they are not investigating comment they are investigating crime that’s why their name is Criminal Investigations Department. So I’ve referred the letter to my lawyers and I’m waiting for their advice.”

“It constitutes a crime”

However, DSP Effia Tenge says the CID thinks Inusah Fuseini’s comment constituent a crime hence the need to investigate.

“It is something that the CID thinks constitute a crime” she told Beatrice Adu in an exclusive interview on Wednesday (23 December).
