Independent MP to Speaker: I shall cooperate and collaborate with NPP caucus

It is expected that the latest development will help decide what caucus holds the majority in the 8th Parliament

Andrew Asiamah Amoako, the Independent Member of Parliament for Fomena has officially written to the Speaker of Parliament signifying his intent to side with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in the 8th Parliament.

In a letter addressed to the Speaker of Parliament, Asiamah Amoako  said: “I shall, for purposes of transacting business associate with the NPP caucus in the Eighth Parliament”.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I do hereby affirm I shall cooperate and collaborate with the NPP caucus in the Eighth Parliament,” he added.

The move follows a request made by Speaker Alban Bagbin during a meeting with the Fomena MP and leaders of the NDC and NPP caucuses; Haruna Iddrisu and Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu respectively on 12 January 2021.

Asiamah's letter to the Speaker

Before the official letter to the Speaker of Parliament, Asiamah Amoako, who is also the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament had revealed that he was going to join the NPP caucus in Parliament after the 7 December election.

“The issue regarding what side I join has been discussed already. I have said it time without number that I am a member of the NPP by blood. There is nothing that can change that,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Speaker is expected to hold a follow-up meeting tomorrow Thursday with leaders of the two caucuses and the Fomena MP to resolve pending matters before the House resumes sitting Friday 15 January 2021.
