Henry Lartey selected as GCPP flagbearer

Dr Henry Lartey says the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) will focus on two areas; agriculture and solar energy

Ghana News Agency (Accra) – Dr Henry Lartey has been retained as the flagbearer of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) for 2020.

This will be the third time Dr Lartey will lead the party in the presidential race. He was disqualified by the Electoral Commission (EC) in the 2016 presidential election. However, Dr Lartey is optimistic that he will appear on the ballot paper this time.

“We have done our work well and I am certain that I will be on the ballot paper and subsequently win the elections in December,” he said.

Speaking at the GCPP’s manifesto launch and sixth national delegates’ congress in Accra, Lartey said the GCPP will prepare towards the party’s first big win in the 2020 general elections.

Lartey will also serve as the party’s national chairman. He was elected unopposed alongside other national executives to lead the party.

Domestication

The GCPP’s “domestication” agenda is still on course, Lartey said, and the party will champion that to win the elections.

“Most Ghanaians have also realised that we need to push the agenda to produce everything in this country and domestication remains the way to go for Ghana,” he stressed. “We need to produce and buy our goods to ensure that we develop the economy within, instead of buying from other countries.”

He urged Ghanaians to support the party to win the December elections and develop Ghana by supporting indigenous industries to expand and produce for the entire country.

Of the party’s manifesto, he said the GCPP will focus on two areas: agriculture and solar energy.

“We need to eat what we grow and grow what we eat and also produce energy from natural sources for our own use and sell to other countries as well,” he said.

Filing fee

Dr Lartey said the GHC100,000 filing fee for presidential aspirants, which has raised eyebrows in some quarters, especially the “smaller” political parties, is expected. The party will meet the demands of the EC, he declared.

“There had been an increment in 2016 and we knew it would happen again. So whether they reduce or not, we need to go by what the Commission has demanded,” he said.

in DecemberHe called on the GCPP campaign team, national and regional executives to continue working hard to wrest power for the first time from the incumbent government.

The national executives for the party are Andy Bampoh Sakyi (first vice-chairman) and Martha Jonah (second vice-chairman). Citizen Ato Dadzie and Alhassan Isahaku will serve as general secretary and general secretary for education, respectively.

The others are Kaizia Ablor (treasurer), George Amoah (organiser) and Cynthia Atta (womens organiser.
