EC to start exhibition of voters’ register from 18 September

Over 16 million people registered successfully during the voter registration exercise, although some people have been challenged

The Electoral Commission (EC) will from next week commence with the exhibition of the 2020 provisional voters’ register.

The exercise will begin from Friday 18 September to Friday 25 September 2020, and is geared towards allowing registrants to authenticate their personal information.

The Commission said the exercise will also enable it to get rid of all unqualified persons from the register ahead of the December polls.

This was disclosed by the director of electoral services at the EC, Dr Serebour Quaicoe, during the acclamation of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings as flagbearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP).

The EC assured that all COVID-19 protocols will be duly observed at the various district offices nationwide.

Last chance for information update

Dr Quaicoe urged the general public to take advantage of the exhibition of the voters’ register to update their records and data.

He warned that this would be the last chance for every registrant to ensure their data is correctly captured on the register.

“Maybe your name was wrongly spelt or your age or sex was wrongly captured; so the exhibition will give you a lifeline to effect those corrections,” he said.

“It could be you have a voter ID card alright, but for some reasons your name didn’t appear in the register.

“Once you go to the exhibition centre with the card, you can apply for your name to be included,” the director of electoral services added.

Alternative mobile service

Meanwhile, the EC also indicated that registered voters can confirm their registration through an availed mobile service.

To this end, persons who are unable to visit the Commission’s offices can send their voter ID numbers to the shortcode 1422 for their details.

Dr Quaicoe was, however, quick to add that should there be a mistake in one’s data, it can only be corrected by visiting the EC’s offices, and not on the phone.

He also urged the public to endeavour to report any person whose name is on the register but is unqualified.

So far, out of the over 16 million registrations captured by the EC, the eligibility of 37,762 applicants has been challenged.
