Eschew partisan politics; support 1D1F, says Upper Manya MP

The MP said the assembly cannot continue to depend on the central government for all its funding needs because the district assemblies common fund has not been disbursed regularly for some time now

The MP for Upper Manya Krobo constituency, Bismark Tetteh Nyarko, has called on the constituency’s electorate, particularly assembly members, to put aside their NDC-NPP interests and build a factory at Sekesua under the government’s One District One Factory initiative.

He said the factory, when completed, will help reduce unemployment and minimise youth involvement in crime. Nyarko believes that if the two major political parties collaborate in this venture, less crime will be recorded in the district.

The MP was speaking at the Upper Manya Krobo district assembly meeting in Asesewa. He bemoaned the district’s poor development, especially road infrastructure.

He said the assembly cannot continue to depend on the central government for all its funding needs because the district assemblies common fund has not been disbursed regularly for some time now. He urged them to collaborate and prioritise raising internally generated funds (IGF).

The district chief executive (DCE), Joe Sam, said revenue mobilisation is a collective responsibility, urging all stakeholders to support it and honour their levy obligations. This, he said, will help the assembly to execute projects.

The DCE said GHC239, 243. 63, representing 28.2% of the 2023 IGF target – GHC846,003.39 –, had been collected as at May.

Sam said the district management is aggressively embarking on an exercise dubbed “Management time out” on Wednesdays and Fridays at Akateng and Asesewa markets to achieve its revenue target. The management team uses the opportunity to supervise the activities of the revenue officers.

On health, Sam bemoaned the high prevalence of HIV infection in the district especially among the youth. He urged the general public to continue to adhere strictly to preventive measures to reduce the spread of the disease.
