Stonebwoy, born Livingstone Etse Satekla, is a Ghanaian reggae and dancehall artist who has taken the music world by storm.
Described in high-praise terms such as ‘king’ and ‘master of his craft’ by his peers in the industry, the man has the Midas touch when it comes to the winning hit-making formula, as his many number one singles will testify.
Here are eight facts you probably didn’t know about him:
One of 7 siblings
The artist was born in the Greater Accra region of Ghana into a family of seven siblings and fell in love with making music from young, using drama class and music class as a vehicle to express himself in school.
By the time he was ready to drop his first commercial single in 2012 he wasted no time being noticed as the tracks Climax featuring Samini and Ghetto Love featuring Irene Logan exploded onto the scene. The singles garnered him nominations at the Ghana Music Awards and featured on his first album Grade 1 alongside a host of prominent Ghanaian artists.
Ashaiman
Born in Ashaiman, a suburb of Accra, Stonebwoy began his music career at a young age, performing at local events and talent shows. He gained recognition for his talent and was eventually signed to the Burniton Music Group, where he released his debut album, “Grade 1.”
Since then, Stonebwoy has released several hit songs, including “Go Higher,” “Pull Up,” and “Most Original,” featuring Sean Paul. He has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry, such as Davido, Sarkodie, and Patoranking, further solidifying his status as a music powerhouse.
Graduate of UPSA
He continued his tertiary education at the University of Professional Studies to earn a degree in marketing in 2013. He began performing as Stonebwoy in high school as an underground rapper.
He appeared on a popular rap competition called “Kasahare Level” on Adom FM, which featured Sarkodie, Dr Cryme and the like. He knocked out several other rappers, gaining himself underground popularity.
No stranger to success
Stonebwoy is no stranger to success. Having been the recipient of some high-end awards such as Best International Act: Africa at the BET Awards, Raggae and Dancehall Artist of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards, 4x AFRIMMA winner, Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award winner and two Billboard plaques, he has duetted with high calibre artists such as Keri Hilson, Sean Paul, Trey Songz, Burna Boy, Alpha Blondie and many more.
He has rocked stages from the UK to the USA, Australia, Italy, Puerto Rico, Amsterdam and beyond, making his electrifying touring an integral part of his career as he leaves it all on the stage for his fans.
In 2015, he received many awards and nominations, ranging from “Artist of the Year” to “Album of the Year”. His sophomore album, Necessary Evil, was the recipient of three Ghana Music Awards from six nominations. He is currently the TGMA Artist of the Year.
An actor in his own right
Alongside his slew of musical feats, there is no stopping a force such as Stonebwoy.
As well as acting in movies such as Happy Death Day and My Name Is Ramadan, he is a global ambassador for sanitation and a brand ambassador for Voltic Mineral Water and Tecno Mobile Ghana.
A national treasure
Stonebwoy is a national treasure in Ghana, and that’s just what his fans say. With over 4 million Instagram followers alone, we may be right as the world watches this celebrated reggae, dancehall, and Afro pop artist not only dominate the African continent, but also hold the world in his grasp.
A household name
By 2017, Stonebwoy was a household name in his chosen musical genres. Much beloved by his peers, he had reached the point where artists such as Sean Paul, King Promise and Burna Boy were looking for spots on the 24-track masterpiece, The Epistles of Mama.
The album peaked at #13 on the Billboard Charts Top 200 albums worldwide, going on to be rated the second-best album in the world, according to Reggaeville. The album also went on to achieve over 10 million views on YouTube.
Philanthropic efforts
In addition to his music career, Stonebwoy is also known for his philanthropic efforts. He is the founder of the Livingstone Foundation, which aims to support underprivileged children in Ghana by providing them with education and healthcare.
