Fire has destroyed property worth thousands of Ghana cedis at the boys’ hostel of the Koforidua Technical Institute (KOTECH) in the Eastern Region on Monday.
The principal of the school Bernard Forson said the fire started around 11:45 pm from the roofing level of one of the rooms in the first floor of the dormitory.
Upon reaching the scene, he realised that the fire could not be quenched with the fire extinguisher and called the fire service who responded quickly to save the situation.
Forson said eight of the students who sustained minor injuries were sent to the hospital for treatment.
“There were minor injuries, we were able to evacuate everybody. Eight of them we sent them to the hospital, seven were discharged,” he said.
The New Juaben North municipal commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, Emmanuel Acquaye, said they had to call for reinforcement due to the intensity of the fire before they were able to bring it under control.
Acquaye said the cause of fire is not immediately known and urged the students to remain calm while investigations continue.
“We are here to do a follow up investigation, so we’ve started with salvage work in the dormitories. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you the supposed cause immediately, you know it’s a process, it’s not an event so in due course we will communicate same to all media houses,” he said.
