SHS students expelled for flouting health protocols

Following the reopening of schools, education officials are taking steps to ensure that students comply strictly with all safety protocols

More than 120 students of Adiembra Senior High School (SHS) in Sekondi have been expelled after being accused of breaching COVID-19 protocols.

The students, all boys, are said to have left campus without seeking permission from teachers.

The school management described it as a complete breach of laid-down restrictions and protocols introduced to ensure the safety of students and other staff.

Junior high schools (JHSs) reopened last Monday (15 June 2020) with enhanced safety measures in place for students, teachers and non-teaching staff. The return follows a three-month suspension of all school activities across the country because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Few basics on campus

The sacked students have defended themselves after being caught leaving campus without permission.

Joy News reported that some of the students explained that they had left campus in search of water.

They have not had access to potable water since school reopened, the Adiembra SHS students said. They were, therefore, left with little option than to move off campus to fetch water at a standpipe.

The students further alleged that their female counterparts were not punished if they went outside for water and other necessities.

They called on the government to come to their aid, because many have been left stranded with their belongings by their expulsion.

Claims of poor safety

The government announced new safety protocols that have to be implemented by all schools before they reopen.

Some of the students of Adiembra Senior High School however accused the school management of negligence.

According to them, the taps on campus have been tjnr to ensure the regular washing of hands under running water.

They also alleged that the directive on social distancing is not being adhered to by teachers, suggesting that close to 60 students are being kept in one dormitory.

The students appealed to all interested parties to visit the school to verify the truth or otherwise of their claims.
