NYA condemns WASSCE students’ riot, urges calm

The National Youth Authority has condemned the riotous behaviour of a handful of candidates who are sitting the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations

The National Youth Authority (NYA) has condemned the riotous behaviour of certain candidates in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), describing their conduct as unacceptable and running counter to all expectations of beneficiaries of a huge investment in education by the government.

A statement signed by the NYA’s chief executive officer, Sylvester Tetteh, says that the Authority “has taken note of some videos gone viral on certain social media platforms of some students demonstrating and putting up uncomplimentary behaviour which is not only in bad taste, but is also contrary to expectations of students [for whom the] government has made considerable investments in aid of furthering their education”.

The statement continued: “The Authority hereby condemns, unequivocally, the acts of indiscipline exhibited by these candidates and wishes to admonish all candidates to be appreciative of the noble gestures of government to afford them a brighter future and remain focused on their studies, be committed to the values of humility, patience, discipline and soberness, and to eschew all manner of negative conduct that does not inure to their well-being and development.”

Call for calm

The NYA also urged all students who are writing this year’s WASSCE, particularly those perceived to be aggrieved, “to continually use legitimate and appropriate means to seek redress and to desist from engaging in any form of destructive behaviour”.

“The Authority entreats the youth of Ghana to nurture and develop selfless and patriotic traits that will go a long way to advance the progress of their communities whilst equipping them to assume the roles of productive citizenship and as custodians of our nation’s rich cultural heritage,” it said.

Background

Some candidates in the ongoing West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination at the Bright Senior High School in Akyem Kukurantumi clashed with invigilators over alleged intimidation on Thursday 6 August 2020.

Swift intervention by armed police personnel from Akyem Tafo and officials of the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) helped restore calm during the attack.

According to the students, the specially deployed external invigilators supervising the examination have been very strict, refusing to allow them even to go out to urinate. The students say this is affecting them psychologically, leading to their inability to concentrate on the exams.

There have also been riotous activities at the Only Believe Senior High Technical School, a private school also in Akyem Kukurantumi, over similar alleged intimidation.

About a thousand candidates are sitting the exams in the school. Some of the students protested about the situation on Wednesday. On Thursday they went berserk after their social studies paper and deflated the tyres of a car with the registration number AS 1471-X, belonging to an invigilator identified only as Mr Acheampong.
