Opinion: Akufo-Addo’s 77th UN General Assembly Speech: Mahama reduced to a traitor

Akufo-Addo made all African nationals proud by boldly championing the cause of the continent in the face of the powers whose institutions are undermining the continent’s progress

On 21st September 2022, President Akufo-Addo delivered a speech at the 77th UN General Assembly to the admiration of his fellow presidents.

He made all African nationals proud by boldly championing the cause of the continent in the face of the powers whose institutions are undermining the continent’s progress.

With facts, he explained how the coronavirus pandemic and the Russian-Ukraine War have adversely impacted economies, including those of superpowers like the United States of America. This has always been his position, both at home and abroad.

Typical of bold leaders, he admitted that Ghana, the country whose activities he superintends, has been hit with inflation, which he described as the number one enemy this year. Full of sympathy for the poor, he acknowledged that they are worst hit by the high cost of food prices.

Caught up by the realities of globalization, President Akufo-Addo said with great empathy and concern for the nationals of Africa, Every bullet, every bomb, every shell that hits a target in Ukraine, hits our pockets and our economies in Africa.”

Nonetheless, the president believes the advanced countries and their institutions are doing something wrong against the progress of African countries, so he tells them bluntly without mincing words. With his Pan African cloak, he raised a flag that the international financial structure is skewed against developing countries.

To this end, he lamented the situation where avenues opened to advanced countries are closed to emerging economies like Ghana and other African countries.

“To make matters worse, credit rating agencies have been quick to downgrade economies in Africa, making it harder to service our debts. The tag of Africa as an investment risk is little more than, in substance, a self-fulfilling prophecy created by the prejudice of the international money market, which denies us access to cheaper borrowing, pushing us deeper into debts,” President Akufo-Addo advocated for the whole of Africa.

The President’s speech is diametrically opposed to the self-contradictory, power-thirsty inspired comments of former President John Mahama in the country and on the international scene. Unlike former President Mahama who says one thing in Ghana and another on international platforms, His Excellency Akufo-Addo repeated what he has been saying in the country on that platform of records where nobody can lie with impunity.

The attitude of President Akufo-Addo towards the credit rating agencies also exposes Mr Mahama as a traitor who for his avaricious thirst for access to state resources welcome their bitter remarks on African economies against the general welfare of the people.

While the President raised concerns about how their ratings scare off investors and deny African countries cheap borrowings, thereby pushing them deeper into debts, Mr Mahama and his cohorts have been praising these bodies against African interest because of their parochial partisan interest.

The latest of this unpatriotic attitude of Mr Mahama and his NDC is their recent shameless expression of joy when one of these credit rating agencies described Ghana’s economy as a junk one. Is it because they don’t know the implications of such ratings, on the country and by extension, the people of Ghana?

If they do but want to ride on the sufferings of the citizens to capture political power, then Ghana cannot be safe in their hands.

The way the audience welcomed the President’s speech shows that he spoke the truth and if that is the case, Mr Mahama has been exposed as a traitor who puts his selfish political interest above the citizens of all African countries.
