Some private schools in Accra have resumed class sessions for primary pupils, defying a directive from the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, for schools to remain closed until January 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Back in March 2020, the president in a televised address said: “All universities, senior high schools and basic schools, i.e. public and private, will be closed from Monday, 16 March until further notice.”
Later in August, Akufo-Addo announced that a “decision has been taken by the Ghana Education Service after consultation with the relevant stakeholders, for SHS 2 and JHS 2 students to return to school from 5 October to 14 December 2020 to complete their academic year.”
With regards to nursery, kindergarten, primary, JHS 1, and SHS 1 students, Akufo-Addo continued: “The next academic year will resume in January 2021, with appropriate adjustments made to the curriculum, to ensure that nothing is lost from the previous year. The relevant dispositions will also be made so that the presence, at the same time, in the school of all streams of students, can occur in safety.”
Asaase News’ undercover investigations have revealed that some schools are clandestinely operating full stream in parts of the capital, contrary to the president’s directive.
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has condemned the development, describing it as worrying, especially as active cases of the COVID virus surge in the country.
