Education Minister praises media for promoting quality education

The Minister of Education said Ghana is on course to transform its education system, focusing on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) to nurture the creativity and talent of young people in the field of engineering

The Minister of Education, Yaw Osei Adutwum, has praised the media for continuously supporting the development and promotion of quality education in Ghana.

He said the media have played a critical role in disseminating information on the government’s policies and interventions in education, especially during the COVID-19 outbreak and especially with the introduction of the Free Senior High School policy, when the government had to take drastic decisions to promote and sustain education in Ghana.

The media have been instrumental in highlighting the success stories resulting from the policy, he said.

Adutwum was speaking at the Media Excellence Awards, organised by the Ashanti regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Kumasi.

About 20 individuals and organisations received honorary awards for their contribution to promoting and developing journalism in the Ashanti Region.

The minister said Ghana is on course to transform the education it offers, focusing on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) to build the creativity and talent of young Ghanaians.

Adutwum said Ghana must empower the younger generation with a creative mindset and the skills to transform all fields of endeavour.

The right skills

Adutwum said Stem education is the way to develop skills and expertise that the country needs to create employment and other opportunities for the people.

He called on the media to continue to encourage the youth to embrace science and technical education, which the government is promoting vigorously to transform Ghana and create employment.

Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, the president of the GJA, said Ghanaians must recognise and reward professionalism and hard work. He said the GJA has launched a journalists’ support fund with the aim of raising GHC2 million to support professionals in the field.

Dwumfour said the media’s watchdog role has helped safeguard Ghana in many areas of public life and that the media will continue to be the fulcrum for national development.

Truth, fairness, honesty

Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, the chairman of the National Media Commission, said that the media play a significant role in national development and must be recognised for this work.

He stressed the need for truth, fairness, honesty and accuracy in reportage, and said any journalist who sacrifices these attributes loses credibility in the eyes of the public.

The Mayor of Kumasi, Samuel Pyne, said the media must reflect on their own role in national development and consider how to strengthen it.

The Nkwantakesehene, Nana Boakye Yam Ababio, who chaired the event, said Ghanaians must acknowledge journalists’ contribution to national life and honour them while they are still alive for discharging their duty honourably.
