Economy, not religion, caused NPP’s 2024 election defeat, says Dr Domfe

The NPP's presidential candidate, Dr Bawumia being a Muslim did not have any significant influence on how people voted

Dr George Domfe, a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy and a founding president of Africa Policy Lens, has debunked assertions linking the New Patriotic Party’s defeat to the party’s candidate being a Muslim.

Contributing to Peace 104.3 FM’s Kokrokoo discussion on Monday, May 28, 2025, Dr. Domfe emphasized that his research indicates that Ghanaians voted against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the NPP based on their economic situation.

“Ghanaians did not renew the mandate of the NPP because of economic hardships, our research shows,” he told Nana Yaw Kesse, the show host.

“The presidential candidate, Dr Bawumia being a Muslim did not have any significant influence on how people voted. His religious affiliation was insignificant in the way Ghanaians cast their votes in December 2024” he added.

He noted that higher global inflation arising out of COVID-19 and the Russian/Ukrainian war impacted adversely on the Ghanaian economy, leading to the NPP suffering at the polls.

“Ghana suffered from the high inflation on the global stage as a result of the two catastrophic events that occurred. COVID-19 and Putin’s invasion of Ukraine heavily affected the global economy, a situation having adverse effects on Ghana and other countries. These led to higher inflation in the country, and it cost the NPP a lot at the polls” he said.

He also added that China, the world’s largest producer of goods, was hit significantly by COVID-19, leading to fewer goods being manufactured than global demand. This, he said, contributed to higher prices of goods and services across the globe which Ghana is a part of.

Oil prices, he explained, were also affected because of low production as against higher demand. This affected the Ghanaian economy as well.

“This is why almost every party in government across the globe that went for elections lost. The global economic crisis led to so many governments being voted out” he concluded.
