Economist: Calls for Akufo-Addo to address Ghanaians on state of economy appropriate

Ghana's economy has been hit hard following the war in Ukraine, leading to inflation hikes and rise in fuel prices

Daniel Ameteye Anim, an economist, has supported calls for President Nana Akufo-Addo to address Ghanaians on the state of the economy.

According to him, the President must outline a raft of measures currently being rolled out to address the challenges facing the economy. Ghana’s economy has been hit hard following the war in Ukraine.

Speaking to Asaase News on Wednesday (25 August), Anim said the call for the address is appropriate.

“I think it is a call in the right direction,” Anim said. “In fact, it is not only peculiar to Ghana, if you look at the global economy, I suspect recession is looming… and more importantly the impact of the global economy is having a toll on our local economy.”

“And there is the need for the president to address the nation and say look this is the state of the economy and this is what we are doing… so I agree perfectly that periodically, once a while he has that moral duty to brief the nation on steps being taken to mitigate them.

“The state of our economy should be considered as an emergency situation just as COVID. The briefly shouldn’t be regularly, like the way he briefed us on COVID, but I think once in a while he has the duty to brief us. I quite agree with those making the call,” Anim said.
