ECG donates high-voltage panels to KNUST to boost engineering training

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has donated two high-voltage substation panels to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to strengthen practical training for electrical engineering students.

The equipment, a 33kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) panel and an 11kV Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) panel sourced from Accra, were presented by ECG’s Ashanti Sub-Transmission Region as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility to support engineering education and skills development in the energy sector.

Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher, General Manager of ECG Ashanti Sub-Transmission, said the initiative was driven by the need to bridge the gap between theory and practice for students entering the power industry.

“We realized that while the students are strong in theory, they have limited exposure to live operational systems,” Fletcher said. “We felt a responsibility as industry leaders to help close that gap and prepare them for the world of work.”

To complement the donation, ECG’s Protection and Control Supervisor, Ing. Opoku Anane, led a training session for KNUST laboratory staff on the operation and maintenance of the panels. The session aimed to enhance the university’s capacity to train students in substation operations, safety, and system protection.

Officials from the Electrical Engineering Department welcomed the support, describing it as a “timely intervention” that would enhance students’ understanding of power systems and strengthen collaboration between academia and industry.

The initiative forms part of ECG’s broader efforts to promote technical education and build local capacity to meet Ghana’s growing energy demands.
