Eastern Region: Headteacher spends his salary to renovate school

Speaking to Asaase News, Richard Marfo reveals his main focus is to make the school conducive for learning and also boost enrolment

The head teacher of Kwasi Nyarko Presbyterian Primary School in the Upper West Akim District of the Eastern Region, Richard Boakye Marfo, has used his monthly salary to paint the school building and also fixed a metal gate.

Marfo’s generous gesture was to make the school very conducive for learning and also avoid trespassers, who usually use the school’s compound as a defecating and smoking spot.

Speaking to Asaase News, Marfo revealed that the school competes with other preparatory schools in the community and in order to increase enrolment in his school, the building has to look attractive to the pupils, which motivated him to undertake such initiative.

“I did that for enrollment drive and to protect my pupils and also to motivate them and as a teacher the needs of your pupil should be at heart,” he said.

He said the town folks were using the school premises as “hotel” and he had to do something by first fixing the doors and windows to the 12-unit classroom block.

Marfo who does the painting himself said he had support and motivation from the school management committee and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).

Marfo said his initiative is an effort to support Ghana to be a better place for everyone.

“As we speak, there are a lot of things we need like desk and tables for teachers. I have 19 teachers but I have been able to provide only four tables for the teachers.”

He appealed to the government, philanthropists and benevolent organisations to come to their aid and provide them with desks and computer lab for the pupils to enhance effective teaching and learning in the school.
