Early media alerts can hinder anti-galamsey raids – Amoakohene warns

Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene has warned that premature media reports about suspected illegal mining activity can undermine enforcement operations.

He maintains, such alerts often prompt operators to flee before security teams arrive.

His caution follows a Facebook post by environmental journalist Erastus Asare Donkor alleging fresh galamsey activity between Fufuoso and Adugyama at the Ahafo Ano enclave.

Amoakohene said a team was dispatched immediately after the broadcast, but the miners had already abandoned the site.

“When the team arrived, they found degraded land and makeshift structures, but no individuals or equipment were present,” he said.

“All structures were immediately pulled down. One week on, there have been no attempts to reoccupy the site,” he added.

The minister urged citizens to channel credible information directly to enforcement bodies.

“We encourage the public to share leads with NAIMOS or the Regional Coordinating Council,” he said. “Early publication of such alerts can sometimes prompt illegal operators to flee before we get there.”

Police have opened investigations to identify those responsible for the activity.

“We remain committed to protecting our environment, enforcing the law, and supporting communities affected by illegal mining,” the Minister indicated.
