E-Levy: Minority stages walkout from Parliament

The move by Minority MPs comes after the Finance Minister moved for a second reading of the E-Levy Bill in Parliament on Tuesday (29 March 2022)

MPs of the Minority Caucus staged a walkout from further debate on the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) in Parliament on Tuesday (29 March).

Before the walkout, the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu (the MP for Tamale South), said that his side still opposes the E-Levy.

Iddrisu urged President Akufo-Addo to withdraw the E-Levy Bill from the House because, he said, the Minority will not have anything to do with the controversial bill.

The House is currently considering the draft legislation after Parliament completed the second reading of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) Bill.

The bill was adopted at the rate of 1.5% of the value of transactions below set thresholds to be determined by the Finance Minister – a reduction on the initial 1.75% – amid the walkout by the Minority.
