Sam George to Spanish embassy: You can’t bless same sex marriage in Ghana

The Ningo-Prampram MP alleged the embassy has officially communicated to Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to carry out a ceremony about same sex marriage in the country

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George has descended heavily on the Spanish Embassy in Ghana over an attempt to “bless” same sex marriage in Ghana.

The Ningo-Prampram MP alleged the embassy has officially communicated to Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to carry out a ceremony about same sex marriage in the country.

The opposition MP questioned why the Spanish embassy is not pushing such agenda in neighbouring countries such as Togo, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast.

“Dear Spanish Embassy in Ghana, I am currently on an official assignment outside the jurisdiction. I would be addressing your letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Regional Integration, Ghana indicating your intent to ‘bless’ same sex marriages in Ghana. Be minded that you are simply guests of our country,” Sam George posted on Facebook.

“I am well informed that the position of the Ministry is in line with our culture, traditions and current position of our laws. I wonder why you are not pushing your perverse agenda in Togo, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast.

Ghana would NOT succumb to this atrocious attempt to change our cultural identity. This should be a wake up call to all who say the Bill currently before Parliament is not necessary and that the intent of our antagonists are harmless.

“I want to personally urge the chairman of the Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs to rise up to the task before his committee and allow the process to proceed with any further hindrance. It is the least service he can render to his constituents and nation,” the lawmaker said.

Condemnation

The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) in June last year condemned the arrest and detention of 21 young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activists in Ho.

The suspects, made up of 16 females and five males, were rounded up at a workshop on 20 May 2021 and have since been on remand.

In a statement, the civil society organisation said the rights of the activists are being abused because they have not flouted any laws of Ghana.

“First, it is clear that gathering to educate people at a hotel venue on LGBT+ issues is not a criminal act or crime under the constitution or any statute. At the time of their arrest, the arrestees were not engaged in or found to have engaged in any unlawful act or in possession of any unlawful or prohibited items.

“The Constitution does not prohibit any group of citizens from banding together to advocate for better treatment under the law, including for reform of the law or of law enforcement to enhance their lives as equal citizens,” the CDD-Ghana statement said.
