DVLA: Replacement of PVC licence is to ensure smooth interface with NIA

DVLA has initiated a process to replace PVC card licences, with a modern and secure smart card driver's licences from now till March 2024

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has said the phasing out of the Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Card driver’s licences with a smart card licence is to enable the authority interface with the National Identification Authority (NIA).

DVLA has initiated a process to replace PVC card licences, with a more modern and secure smart card driver’s licences from now till March 2024. After this deadline, all PVC card driver’s licences will be rendered invalid.

Speaking to Benjamin Offei-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (14 September), Kafui Semevo, director, driver training, testing and licensing at DVLA said the move is strategic.

“In 2017 when we started replacing the old card, the reasons were that the old licence had outlived its figurative features and then also the database did not afford us the opportunity to interface with other institutions for enforcement purposes.

“So to upgrade the system, the smart card licence was issued, and that smartcard database afforded us the opportunity to interface with the NIA.

“What we are seeking to do is that, now that the NIA cards have become a verification source for all service providers by the state, we are preparing to interface with the NIA. It is very important that we bring all drivers who do not have the smartcard license on board, so that we are able to have all licence on the same database and avoid running two systems by the end of March 2024,” Semevo said.
