The police have picked up 13 suspects in connection with the “unlawful invasion” of the premises of the Tamale district court on Monday by some irate youth.
The police clashed with the locals in the court premises when a case involving an alleged drug dealer, Alhaji Osman, who reportedly trades in tramadol in large quantities in the Northern Region, was ongoing.
According to reports, residents of Tamale besieged the court premises, chanting that the alleged drug dealer should be put behind bars and made to face the law. This brought serious exchanges between the law enforcement agencies and some aggrieved youth, who claimed the police are protecting the offender.
There was pandemonium as the police exchanged fire with the irate youth. The melee led to the destruction of court properties. Three people including a police officer reportedly sustained injury.

In a terse statement on Monday (28 August), the police confirmed the arrest adding that it will soon provide further details on the development.
‘Police arrest 13 people for attack on Tamale District Court 1. Full details will be communicated soon,” the police statement said.
Grave concern
Meanwhile, the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has condemned what it called “unlawful invasion” of the premises of the Tamale district court on Monday (28 August) by some “unscrupulous elements”
“The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) notes with grave concern the violent and unlawful invasion of the premises of the district court Tamale by some unscrupulous elements of Tamale on Monday 28th August 2023 at around 10:00am,” the association’s statement said.
“That attack which saw residents troop the court premises in their numbers and pelting stones that destroyed fixtures and injured a police officer, leading to exchange of gun fire by the police to disperse the irate youth. In no uncertain terms, JUSAG unreservedly condemn the barbaric act of the miscreants.”
“We also wish to commend the Ghana Police Service for their swift intervention with reinforcement that saved the properties and lives of the Magistrates, Court Officials, Lawyers, Litigants and other court users during the sad event.”
JUSAG therefore called “on the Judicial Service and the securities services to intensify efforts to ensure optimum safety and security of all officers of the court before justice administration resumes at the court.”
