Drivers to face court as KMA deploys police, metro guards to stop fare increments

The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, has warned commercial drivers against charging unapproved transport fares in the metropolis.

In a statement issued on 28 July, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) said it had received reports that some drivers were arbitrarily increasing fares despite no official adjustment by the Tripartite Committee — made up of the Ministry of Transport, transport unions, and regulatory bodies.

The Assembly emphasized that no meeting had been held to approve new fares and that any fare hikes are therefore illegal.

Drivers found to be in breach will have their vehicles impounded and face prosecution, the KMA said. The Mayor has ordered the Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) and Metro Guards to monitor roads and arrest offenders.

Authorities are urging commercial drivers and the public to comply with existing fare structures to maintain order on Kumasi’s roads.
