The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu, has called for calm and due process in the high-profile arrest of New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Addressing a gathering during President John Mahama’s Thank You Tour in the Bono Region, the respected traditional leader and High Court judge stressed the need for justice to prevail, regardless of political affiliation or social standing.
“We may admire individuals for their influence and charisma, but when the law is in motion, admiration must give way to justice,” Osagyefo said.
Chairman Wontumi is currently under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over alleged financial crimes, including fraud, money laundering and causing financial loss to the state. He has been granted bail to the tune of GHC50 million, a condition his legal team has so far failed to meet, leaving him in custody.
The development has sparked protests from NPP supporters, who thronged EOCO’s headquarters in Accra on Thursday to demand his release, describing the bail terms as punitive.
But Osagyefo Agyemang Badu cautioned Ghanaians not to politicise the legal process, saying the rule of law must be upheld without fear or favor.
“Justice must be blind. The law must not bend for power, wealth or political color,” he added.
The Dormaahene also condemned a recent protest led by the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, at the EOCO premises, describing the action as inappropriate and potentially disruptive to ongoing investigations.
Meanwhile, a delegation led by Mahamudu Bawumia attempted to visit Wontumi at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters but was denied access. Bawumia expressed disappointment over the situation.
Afenyo-Markin, who accompanied the vice-president, has been vocal in defending Chairman Wontumi and has questioned EOCO’s handling of the case.
As legal proceedings continue, public attention remains fixed on Ghana’s justice institutions and their ability to demonstrate impartiality in politically sensitive cases.
