Don’t throw blows in Parliament in 2022, Kassena-Nankana MCE urges Navrongo Central MP

Joseph Adongo, the MCE of Kassena-Nankana has admonished the Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central not to engage in any fisticuffs in Parliament this year.

Adongo, who had expected to see Sampson Tangombu Chiragia among the invited dignitaries at the celebration of the Kologo Yesiga Festival on Monday (3 January 2022), was disappointed the MP failed to show up for the important event.

The absence of the Navrongo Central MP, however, did not stop Adongo from giving him what he (Adongo) said would help Chiragia discharge his duties as a Member of Parliament. 

He was sure his message would get to the Member Parliament.

Adongo, while using the recent brawl in Parliament between the Majority and Minority sides of the House over the passing of the E-Levy, advised Chiragia to make it one of his New Year resolutions not to fight in Parliament.

“Let me add this. I was thinking we will have our MP here. But it’s rather unfortunate he is not around to join the people of Kologo to celebrate their festival. But I know he may have some people here or the message will get out there. I know that in 2022 we have all made resolutions. I want to beg and advise our Member of Parliament that going forward he will not throw blows in Parliament.”

Adongo further urged the Members of Parliament to “use peaceful means to settle differences and find solutions to problems so that at the end we will know that we voted for a lawmaker and not somebody who will go and throw blows.” 

Regional Minister

For his part, the Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu called for the preservation and promotion of Ghanaian culture through festivals.

He congratulated the chiefs and people of Kologo for sustaining the Yesiga Festival and urged them to use the occasion to foster unity and propel the development of the area. 

Yakubu, in his statement read on his behalf, reiterated the government’s commitment to the development of Kologo. He urged the chiefs and people to embrace the numerous initiatives of the Akufo-Addo government such as the Free SHS policy and the Youth Enterprise Fund. 

He urged the youth to desist from attitudes that can rob them of a bright future. He said the youth must not allow vices like armed robbery, corruption, prostitution, conflicts, bush burning and illegal mining to become endemic in the society.

Yakubu said as the Regional Security Council continues to work to ensure peace in the region, all and sundry should volunteer information on the activities of criminals to the law enforcement agencies to clump down their activities.
