E/R: 16 die in Akyem Asafo road crash

A head-on collision at Akyem Asafo Friday morning left 16 passengers, comprising 13 males and three females, dead on the spot

At least 16 passengers died on the spot on Friday when two KIA Grandbird buses collided at Akyem Asafo in the Eastern Region, the police have confirmed.

According to an eyewitness, the accident was as a result of miscalculated overtaking on the part of the driver from the Accra direction of the road, resulting in the fatal crash.

Other passengers sustained injuries in the process and have been rushed to the Suhum Government Hospital and the Akyem Asafo Health Center for treatment, according to acting Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command Sergeant Francis Gomado.

Officials from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ambulance Service are helping the police restore order at that stretch of the road for traffic to flow.

The deceased comprising 13 males and three females including the two drivers have been taken to the Suhum Government Hospital morgue for identification.
