Disregard purported 20% increase in fares, says Transport Ministry

Transport fare reduction/GPRTU/Public transport: trotro station

The Transport Ministry has urged the public to disregard a purported 20% increase in transport fares by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).

“There has not been any negotiation with the transport operators for a review of transport fares” the Ministry said in a statement.

“When it becomes necessary for such negotiations and the decisions are taken, the public will be appropriately informed, as has been done in the past,” the statement added.

The Ministry of Transport said it will continue to ensure “fair and reasonable public transport fares, keeping in mind the needs of transport operators and the general public.”

Meanwhile, commercial drivers at the Tema Station in Accra have thrown their support behind the 20% expected increase by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).

Speaking to Asaase News, some commercial drivers revealed a consensus among them, aligning with the proposed fare adjustment.

“The increase is good because the fuel too is costly. Now we heard that they have increased the fuel; that’s why they have to increase the transport too, so there’s no problem,” a driver said.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union announced plans for a fare increment of up to 20%, effective 24 January 2024, citing the increase in fuel prices.

“This has become necessary as a result of excessive taxes on spare parts adversely affecting our operations due to hike in its prices,” parts of the statement from GPRTU read.
