NPP defies court order to hold elections in Fomena

The high court on Wednesday granted an injunction application filed by some aggrieved members of the party challenging the credibility of the elections

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has held elections in the Fomena Constituency, despite a court order.

The High Court on Wednesday granted an injunction application filed by some aggrieved members of the party challenging the credibility of the elections.

The party risks being cited for contempt, political watchers have said.

The election, which took place at the St. Hubert Roman Catholic Church at Akrokeri had about 356 party delegates electing their preferred candidates for all 10 constituency executive positions, including that of the chairmanship slot.

Two aggrieved members – Benjamin Ofori and Kwame Anokye – are challenging the credibility of the polling station elections supervised by a committee led by former Bantama lawmaker, Henry Kwabena Kokofu.

Two file injunction against Fomena NPP elections

Two aggrieved supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prayed the High Court to restrain the party from holding an election in the Fomena Constituency of the Ashanti Region.

They claim that some individuals who had automatically forfeited their party membership after sponsoring an independent candidate during the 2020 general elections were allowed to pick nomination forms to contest various positions.

“The plaintiffs aver that all efforts to compel the defendants from disqualifying these people from contesting the elections have proven futile.

“The plaintiffs have been pushed to the belief that aforementioned people can be stopped or disqualified from contesting in the aforementioned 1st defendant only with the help of this Honorable Court”, their writ read in part.

The plaintiffs want among others a declaration that any member of the New Patriotic Party who forfeits his membership cannot contest elections.

The party’s General Secretary, John Boadu has been served today (Thursday) at an undisclosed location in Accra, sources familiar with the development had told www.asaaseradio.com.

What happened in Fomena?

The NPP suspended elections in the Fomena constituency as it opened nominations to pick new officers at the grassroots.

Some aggrieved party members, however, staged a protest against the decision as they accused the rank-and-file of the party of circumventing the electoral process to favour followers of incumbent MP for the area, Andrew Amoako Asiamah.

Asiamah, who is currently the Second Deputy Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament broke ranks to contest as an independent candidate during the 2020 polls.

The protesters had warned they will resist attempts to impose the lawmaker on the constituency.
