President Akufo-Addo appoints deputy AU permanent ambassador, two others
President Akufo-Addo designates a new high commissioner to Australia, permanent deputy representative to the AU and ambassador in situ
President Akufo-Addo has appointed Damtey Bediako Asare as Ghana’s deputy permanent representative to the African Union (AU). Two others – Dr Joseph Nii Sai Cofie Agoe and Samuel Yaw Kumah – were simultaneously appointed as Ghana’s high commissioner to Australia and ambassador in situ respectively.
Addressing the new high commissioner and ambassadors as they received their credentials in a ceremony at Jubilee House in Accra, President Akufo-Addo charged the new envoys to do everything within their power to represent and pursue the interest of Ghana at all times and in all their dealings with the rest of the world.
The high commissioner
To High Commissioner Nii Sai Cofie Agoe, President Akufo-Addo reminded him of his three fold role which are diplomatic, ceremonial and administrative.
He asked him to bear in mind that in all of the three functions, he has the onerous responsibility of persevering and promoting the image of a country with a high reputation today among the comity of nationsh.
Permanent representative
The president urged the deputy permanent representative of Ghana to the African Union, Damtey Bediako Asare, to offer all the support he can to Ghana’s permanent ambassador to the African Union, Amma Twum-Amoah, as he joins her in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Ambassador in situ
Admonishing the ambassador in situ, Samuel Yaw Kumah, who is currently the chief of protocol (CoP) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Akufo-Addo said he has already distinguished himself in his role as CoP.
He said the new appointment as ambassador in situ, should be seen as an enhancement of his status to enable him interact on an even keel, with members of the diplomatic corps in Accra.
“In doing your work, all of you must recall at all times, our objective, to achieve a ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’, a Ghana which has an honest system of Governance, free of corruption, and which is self-reliant and exploiting its own resources with hard work, enterprise and creativity. To build a free, prosperous Ghana of the dreams of the founding fathers of our nation,” the president said.
Response of envoys
Dr Joseph Nii Sai Cofie Agoe, in his response on behalf of his two other colleagues registered their respective thanks to the President for the honour done them.
“While we take pride as individuals in this great honour and privilege bestowed upon us, we are mindful of the huge responsibilities that go with our respect roles in achieving the noble vision of the President of the Republic towards the well-being of all Ghanaians.” Ghana’s high commissioner to Australia said.
