Dialysis patients at Korle Bu have been “unfairly” treated, says Renal Patients Association

Ahenkorah

President of the Renal Patients Association, Baffour Kojo Ahenkorah, has accused the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) of unfair treatment towards its patients, highlighting a reduction in the number of free dialysis sessions provided.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Wednesday (14 August), Ahenkorah expressed frustration over the hospital’s decision to reduce the free dialysis sessions from two to one.

He argued that if the philanthropist who had been assisting the hospital was no longer involved, the hospital should have taken steps to ensure that patients continued to receive the two free sessions that were originally promised.

“I think that place, Korle Bu, was not fair with its patients because… we were saying that there is a philanthropist who is helping Korle Bu, so if the philanthropist then is not working in Korle Bu, Korle Bu should have insisted so that we could also get our two free dialysis sessions; now they are going to give us one instead of the two,” Ahenkorah said.

He further pointed out that patients in other regional hospitals, including Kumasi, Cape Coast, Ho, and Tamale, receive two free sessions, making the situation at Korle Bu particularly concerning.

Ahenkorah suggested that the disparity is unjust and hinted at potential action against the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to address the issue.

“Kumasi is getting two, Cape Coast is getting two, Ho, Tamale, they are getting two—why Korle Bu one?” he stated. “That is what Korle Bu said they are going to give us so maybe we need to go back to National Health Insurance to fight for our rights, which will be doing that very soon.”

Korle Bu’s public relations officer, Mustapha Salifu, swiftly responded to Ahenkora’s claims on the ABS. He insisted that the hospital had received the funds owed to dialysis patients and was open to meeting with Ahenkora’s team to clarify any misunderstandings.

“We have received transfers from the National Health Insurance Authority,” Salifu said. “They are not Korle Bu’s money so they are to advise us whether they want us to credit them for additional dialysis sessions or they want the money refunded to them.”

He stressed that no patient would lose out, as the funds were being held in trust. “I can assure you that no patient will lose out,” he added. “[This money] has been paid on their behalf by the National Health Insurance Authority. So we haven’t had additional engagement with them; if any issues crop up, then we will deal with it.”
