Dialysis access expands as Asaase Foundation reaches 11 hospitals nationwide

Asaase Foundation was a co-sponsor of the Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital Christmas party (12 December 2024). Rockson Obeng, public relations officer of PML (second from left), was the MC for the occasion

The Asaase Foundation will on Friday donate dialysis machines to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, marking its 11th renal care intervention across Ghana.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (11 December), President of the Foundation, Kojo Mensah, said the initiative was inspired by the struggles of a former Asaase Radio presenter who battled kidney disease while working from the UK.

“That story drew the attention of our chairman, and it sparked a deep interest in kidney care,” he said.

The Foundation later encountered another trustee, Anita, who also lived with kidney challenges and worked with St. Helier Hospital in the UK. This partnership enabled the acquisition of machines and training support.

Mensah explained that while the machines are donated, the Foundation funds the construction of renal treatment and sluice rooms — often the most expensive component.

“It costs around GHS 50,000 to build the space for each installation,” he said. “When you multiply that by 10 facilities already supported, the scale becomes clear.”

Interventions so far include the Upper West, Upper East, Sunyani, Sogakope, Enchi, Obuasi, and the Islamic Hospital at Atonsu in Kumasi.

He said Cape Coast was chosen due to high demand, the centrality of the facility, and its existing medical capacity.

On sustainability, he emphasised that the Foundation relies on goodwill from donors, philanthropists, corporate partners, and technical support from biomedical engineering partners.

“We are a small team. This is purely charity work powered by people who see the results and want to help,” he said.

Tomorrow’s handover will involve hospital leadership, regional authorities, nephrologists, and kidney care staff.

The Foundation continues to support the Korle-Bu Children’s Hospital annually through gifts and donations during the festive season.
