Deputy Speaker’s brother: I stand by my threat to kill, only children of the poor follow politicians

Kofi Buapen, also known as Edward Osei (brother of Joseph Osei-Owusu, MP for Bekwai and first deputy Speaker)

A brother of the incumbent MP for Bekwai in the Ashanti Region and first deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu (Joe Wise), has insisted that he stands by his threat to kill a delegate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bekwai constituency who, he claims, supports the candidature of Ralph Poku-Adusei for MP in the 2024 general election.

Kofi Buapen, also known as Edward Osei (brother of Joe Wise), made this known in a voice note he sent to a Bekwai constituent following media reports that he has threatened to kill an NPP delegate.

In his latest voice note, Edward Osei also said it is only the children of poor people who allow themselves to be used by politicians to achieve their political objectives, and that no child of the rich in society roots for politicians.

In a police complaint filed on 6 January 2023 by the victim of the threat, William Bonsu, a polling station observer for the NPP, Bonsu said he was engaged in a chat on a WhatsApp platform called “Coalition to Elect Nana and Bawumia“ (CENAB Bekwai) and, not being pleased with a comment by Kofi Buapen, also known as Edward Osei (Joe Wise’s brother), he (William Bonsu) registered his displeasure on the platform.

Threat to kill

Edward Osei subsequently sent a private voice note to William Bonsu in which he threatened him.

In his threat, Edward Osei is heard stating that he is capable of taking care of William Bonsu and his entire family and that if he thinks he has any form of security and guarantees following Ralph Poku-Adusei, he is certainly mistaken.

William Bonsu, NPP delegate and victim of Edward Osei’s threats

“I have lived a better life than your [William Bonsu’s] father. You are a mad man and a fool. If I were your uncle, you would have been better off. You are a mad man and a fool.

“The fact that we are both on the same platform does not make me your co-equal. You are a fool. Do you think following Ralph [Ralph Poku-Adusei] means you have arrived and do you think Ralph [Poku-Adusei] is my co-equal?” said Edward Osei in his voice note.

“You are a mad man. You are a fool. How dare you? You are warned, if you mess with me, I will kill you. Do you know me? You’re mad,” Kofi Buapen, also known as Edward Osei (brother of Joe Wise), is heard saying further in the voice note.

The poor follow politicians

In his latest voice note, Kofi Buapen, also known as Edward Osei (brother of Joe Wise), is heard saying: “I do not have any issues with Ralph and I have not mentioned his name in any derogatory manner. I rather have issues with the boys around him.

“I insist that I have lived a better life than his [William Bonsu’s] father and I say so because everyone who is an achiever in life will never have his children campaigning for a politician.

“Joe Wise’s children are lawyers and engineers abroad. There is no achiever in this life whose children are rooting for a politician. It is only the children of the poor who stupidly follow and cheer on politicians,” Kofi Buapen, also known as Edward Osei (brother of Joe Wise), declared.

“You will never see any of my children on any political platform rooting for any politician. They are in school bettering their lives to become prominent persons in future.

“I repeat that I don’t have any issues with Ralph: however, I have serious problems with the boys who are around him rooting for him so they can get some money from him,” Edward Osei added.

The Bekwai seat

Joseph Osei-Owusu, even though a member of the New Patriotic Party, ran as an independent candidate in the 2008 election after losing in the NPP primaries to represent the party as its candidate.

He went on to win the Bekwai seat in the 2012, 2016 and 2020 elections on the ticket of the NPP.

However, Osei-Owusu has given the strongest indication yet that he is no longer interested in running for the Bekwai seat in the 2024 general election.
