“Deputy AG being misled or politicising Wontumi case”- Legal team fights back

A member of Bernard Antwi Boasiako’s legal team Enoch Afoakwah has strongly criticised the Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem Sai accusing him of politicising an ongoing legal matter and misrepresenting the facts surrounding the NPP regional chairman’s detention.

Srem Sai in a Facebook statement revealed that Wontumi is being investigated for multiple criminal offences — including fraud, money laundering, and involvement in international organised crime. He added that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) was working with foreign law enforcement on a wider probe.

Speaking on political programme, Atumpan on AsaasePa 107.3 FM on Thursday (29 May) Afoakwah expressed shock by the Deputy AG’s decision to comment publicly on the matter, especially in a manner he described as “partisan” and “unbecoming of a public officer.”

“I don’t want to believe Dr Justice Srem Sai wrote this,”Afoakwah told the host Bonohene Baffour-Awuah.

“It smacks of political interference. As a Deputy AG, he ought to be properly briefed before making such a serious claim publicly”, he added.

Baseless claims

Afoakwah further questioned whether the Deputy Attorney General had received full briefings from the police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) before making his claims public.

He also insisted the accusations are baseless and politically motivated, adding that Wontumi has denied all charges levelled against him.

“It’s either he wasn’t properly briefed by the CID, or he is trying to build political capital by making prejudicial statements,” Mr Afoakwah said.

“This is not law at play. This is raw political manoeuvring. The man [Wontumi] has been denied his basic rights,” he said. “All well-meaning Ghanaians must speak out against this abuse.”

Earlier protests

Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been in EOCO custody for over 48 hours, prompting protests by his party’s MPs and supporters outside the EOCO headquarters in Accra.

The protests escalated earlier today, with Minority MPs staging a sit-down demonstration.
