Delay vote, reform party, elect flagbearer by June 2026 – Asamoah Boateng urges NPP

Stephen Asamoah Boateng, a leading voice within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is calling for a postponement of the party’s flagbearer election to allow for internal reforms and grassroots rebuilding following the party’s crushing electoral defeat.

Speaking on AsaasePa 107.3 FM on Thursday (3 July), the former minister and one-time national chairman hopeful expressed concern over the direction of the party, warning that pushing ahead with a leadership contest without addressing structural challenges could deepen internal cracks.

He criticised what he described as a top-down approach to decision-making and insisted that the party must empower its base.

“We can delay the vote, reform the party, and still elect a flagbearer by June,” Asamoah Boateng said, proposing a four-month window to clean up the NPP’s voter register, validate its membership, and restore confidence at the grassroots level.

“Let’s give the chance to the grassroots so we can vote for a flagbearer who truly connects with them.”

Asamoah Boateng acknowledged the party’s current financial distress and recommended broader participation in funding NPP activities as a way to eliminate vote-buying and restore discipline.

“We must plan and get everybody to contribute. That is the cure,” he added.

The former Information Minister also warned against turning the upcoming national delegates conference into a campaign rally, urging that the event be dedicated to sober reflection.

“I feel scared about the conference. People will come with banners and noise, but this should be a moment for unity, not division.”

Asamoah Boateng reiterated his call for the full implementation of the Mike Oquaye Committee’s post-election review, noting that while constitutional amendments were underway, the political recommendations remained untouched.
