Dawn raids in Ashanti lead to 300 arrests after violence against EPA team, journalists

Ghana’s Armed Forces and Police Service on Wednesday carried out coordinated dawn operations in parts of the Ashanti, Volta and Ahafo Regions following attacks on Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials, police officers, and journalists during anti-illegal mining duties.

The swoops, which took place in Adansi Dadwen and Anwoma in the Ashanti Region, Ehi in the Volta Region, and Hwedie, Kenyase, Guaso, and Marhani in the Ahafo Region, were aimed at arresting suspects involved in the recent incidents targeting state officials enforcing anti-galamsey laws.

In Adansi Dadwen, there was a heavy security presence as personnel combed through the community.

Dozens of people were arrested during the operation as troops and police searched homes and detained individuals believed to be connected to the attacks.

Women and children were seen wailing as officers moved through the town.

The Ghana Armed Forces and Police Service said the raids were part of efforts to restore order and protect officials from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and the EPA, who have come under increasing threats in recent months.

Authorities warned that any individual or group that obstructs security operations in mining areas or interferes with lawful duties would face the full force of the law.

The security agencies assured the public that measures have been taken to safeguard residents in the affected areas and urged communities to remain calm.

The operations highlight the government’s intensified crackdown on illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, which has caused widespread environmental damage and provoked growing clashes between enforcement teams and local miners.
