Jacqueline Du Baffour, an Agile transformation leader and data privacy expert, has urged Ghanaian organisations—especially banks, fintechs and SMEs—to rethink their approach to data protection, insisting it must become a strategic priority rather than a legal afterthought.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (25 November), she said many organisations misunderstand the purpose of data protection laws.
“The biggest misconception is that you’re not allowed to process data,” she said. “You can, but just make sure you’ve got the right measures in place and that the person has given consent.”
Du Baffour, who has trained over 1,000 employees globally on data privacy, warned that Ghanaian companies risk public mistrust and regulatory penalties if they treat data protection as a tick-box requirement.
She highlighted loopholes that often lead to breaches—including weak password hygiene, poor encryption practices and staff carelessness.
“Sometimes it only takes one person’s login details,” she explained. “If you’re asked to change your password in five days, do it. Don’t pass your credentials on. Reject anyone offering money for data.”
She urged startups and SMEs to invest in legal translation of data protection laws, staff training, and role-based access to sensitive information.
Du Baffour also emphasised that global competitiveness depends on compliance.
“If Ghanaian companies want to trade outside the country, especially in Europe, they must take data protection seriously,” she said.
With data breaches becoming more common, she believes the shift toward stronger privacy cultures is both necessary and inevitable.
“You want customers to trust you. That’s the only way they will give you their data.”
