Data Protection Commission investigates possible data breach on MTN systems

The DPC assured Ghanaians that it is actively monitoring the situation and working closely with MTN Ghana, the National Communications Authority, and the Cybersecurity Authority to determine the scope of the incident

The Data Protection Commission (DPC) has confirmed it is investigating a potential cybersecurity incident involving the unauthorised access to personal information of some MTN customers.

In a press release dated 25 April 2025, the Commission indicated that while MTN Ghana has assured that its core network, billing systems, and financial services infrastructure were not affected, the full extent of the breach is still under assessment.

The DPC assured Ghanaians that it is actively monitoring the situation and working closely with MTN Ghana, the National Communications Authority, and the Cybersecurity Authority to determine the scope of the incident.

It emphasised that should it be confirmed that the personal information of any Ghanaian citizen or resident has been compromised, the Commission will not hesitate to invoke its enforcement powers under Act 843 to hold MTN Ghana and the MTN Group accountable.

Reiterating its commitment to safeguarding data privacy, the DPC reminded all data controllers and processors operating within Ghana that personal information protection is a fundamental right under Act 843. Institutions handling personal data must adhere strictly to these legal provisions.

The public was also urged to remain vigilant, practice good digital safety habits, and report suspicious activity to their service providers or the Commission. DPC assured that it would continue to provide updates as the situation develops, reinforcing its commitment to transparency and protecting individual rights in the digital space.

For further information, the public can contact the Commission via email at info@dataprotection.org.gh or call 0256228269/0256301360.
