Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh donates GH¢10,000, 50 bags of cement to Adum PZ fire victims

His visit came at a time of heightened tensions at the site, following a decision by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to cordon off the area for safety and planning assessments

A former president of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh, has donated cash and building materials to victims of the recent fire outbreak at Adum PZ in Kumasi, amid a growing standoff between traders and city authorities.

Mr. Kyeremeh, who visited the scene on Thursday (24 April), presented a donation of GH¢10,000 and 50 bags of cement to affected traders. The gesture, he said, was aimed at supporting the victims to begin rebuilding their livelihoods after the devastating blaze reduced several shops and stalls to ashes last week.

His visit came at a time of heightened tensions at the site, following a decision by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to cordon off the area for safety and planning assessments. Frustrated by the delay in resuming business, some traders dismantled the barricades, prompting the deployment of a joint police and military team to the area.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Kyeremeh who is founder of the Keen on Development Foundation, expressed solidarity with the affected traders and called on city authorities to engage the community in constructive dialogue rather than rely on force.

“We decided to put our heads together to support our mothers and fathers who struggling to pay our school fees…Unfortunately we witnessed a situation where the security forces were seen attacking our parents. No security forces can intimidate us. We want authorities to come clear with a road map to rebuilding this market.

“The youth in this country are behind you [the traders] and we will stand with them”, he declared.

The donation has been welcomed by local traders, many of whom have been left without means of livelihood. Several called on government and other well-meaning individuals to emulate the gesture and speed up the rebuilding process.

Authorities say investigations into the cause of the fire are still ongoing, and that the restriction is a necessary measure to protect life and property while structural assessments are carried out.
