Daniel Nyame declares intent to contest Akwatia NPP parliamentary slot following MP’s passing

Daniel Nyame, a respected community developer and entrepreneur, has officially declared his intention to contest the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary for the Akwatia Constituency in the wake of the sudden death of sitting MP, Hon Ernest Kumi.

In a solemn but determined statement issued on Thursday, 17 July, Nyame extended his condolences to the family and supporters of the late MP, describing Kumi as “our dear brother, friend, and Member of Parliament” whose death “has left a great void in our party and in the hearts of many”.

Nyame said his decision to run for office comes after “extensive consultations and prayers”, adding that his bid is not rooted in personal ambition but in a “sincere desire to contribute meaningfully to the development of our constituency and to help secure a decisive victory for the NPP.”

Positioning himself as a unifying figure ready to restore energy and purpose to the party’s base in Akwatia, Nyame highlighted his record as a “community builder and job creator”, promising to serve with humility, accountability, and a focus on the youth.

“I offer fresh energy, broad appeal across age groups, and a practical vision that connects with the everyday aspirations of our people,” he said.

Nyame also made a direct appeal to delegates in the Akwatia Constituency, urging them to support a candidate who not only upholds the NPP’s core values but also resonates with the broader electorate, particularly first-time and young voters.

“Together, we can present a candidate who not only respects our Party’s values but also appeals to the broader electorate,” Nyame stated. “Let us move forward in unity, in memory of the late Hon. Ernest Kumi, and in service to Akwatia and the New Patriotic Party.”

The Akwatia seat is widely considered a key battleground for the NPP in the Eastern Region, and the upcoming by-election will be closely watched for its national implications. The party is expected to announce timelines for nominations and the internal primary in the coming days.
