A young man believed to be in his 20s has drowned in the Oti River in the Krachi Nchumuru district of the Oti Region. The young man, Attah Donkor, was a driver’s mate for a yam cargo vehicle.

The incident which occurred in the afternoon over the weekend has left residents in a state of shock. Speaking to Asaase News, the district director of the National Disaster Management Organisation, Boffour Elijah Bawah, confirmed that the deceased was swimming in the Oti River when the incident occurred.

Boffour said that initial investigation shows that the deceased’s car had loaded some tubers of yam and parked at the other side of the river waiting to cross the river on the ferry and continue to Accra. Whiles waiting for the ferry, Donkor decided to go for a swim in the river. This led to his untimely death.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to Asaase Radio’s Oti Regional correspondent off record lamented about the tragedy. They said efforts to rescue Donkor proved futile initially. Some fisherfolk joined the search party. They found Donkor’s dead body and brought it to the shore.

The necessary traditional rites have been performed and the body has been buried.

Donkor was a native of Borae Number 2 in the Krachi Nchumuru District.
