National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for South Dayi Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, a fellow legislator representing the Assin South constituency on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The lawsuit, filed at the High Court in Accra, accuses Ntim Fordjour of making defamatory statements against Dafeamekpor in a social media post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Claim
In the lawsuit, Dafeamekpor claims that the post by Ntim Fordjour falsely suggested that he, as Vice Chairman of the Committee on Subsidiary Legislation, was involved in a bribery scandal involving a payment of GHC 360,000 to the committee for passing a Legislative Instrument (L.I).
The post further alleged that the committee looted GHC 49 million, prompting calls for a probe.
Dafeamekpor, who is also the Chief Whip of the Majority (NDC) in Parliament, has described the allegations as baseless, malicious, and damaging to his reputation.
He contends that the post has led to a loss of public confidence in him and has caused him emotional distress, economic harm, and professional disruption.
Reliefs
The Plaintiff is seeking a declaration from the court that the statements made by Ntim Fordjour are defamatory, false, and malicious.
He is also requesting an order for an apology, a retraction of the statements, and multiple forms of damages, including general, aggravated, punitive, and compensatory damages.
Dafeamekpor further demands that the court impose an interlocutory and perpetual injunction, preventing Ntim Fordjour from making further defamatory statements against him.
Ntim Fordjour has not yet responded to the lawsuit publicly, and it remains unclear whether he intends to contest the claims in court.
